Module-based pre-moderation helps providers meet industry standards

Over the last few years, Dairy Training Limited (a subsidiary of DairyNZ) has sent their module-based assessments and micro-credential material to us for pre-moderation.

Most of these submissions have been at Level 5 – where the material is complex and examines the business side of dairy farming, contract milking, and leadership within the sector.

One submission, however, was the complete material for their Level 2 Introduction to Dairy Farming programmes. As these are non-unit standard assessments that are based on Dairy Training Limited’s own learning outcomes, they’re technically not required to send the material for pre-moderation.

Despite this, Dairy Training Limited saw the value of having their own material reviewed by independent moderation experts and asked if we could take a look.

We were happy to give constructive feedback on their Level 2 material, treating the submission like any other. The input we provide is always designed to improve the quality of assessment and share best practices, no matter the level.

Through the pre-moderation process over the years, Dairy Training Limited has steadily increased their assessment standard, producing clearer, more user-friendly material that better supports both learner understanding and assessor consistency.

This collaborative relationship demonstrates the value of external moderation, even when it’s not technically required.
